Cranked cable needles are a type of traditional straight cable needles that are used to temporarily hold stitches when knitting cable patterns. They can be placed in front of or behind the knitting.

Also used for some lace stitches. The “crank” in the cable needle stops the stitches slipping off as you work the stitches either side, something which can happen with the straight cable needles.
